Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) conducted its first category-based Express Entry draw on June 30. The draw invited many applicants from the healthcare and STEM sectors. Most Express Entry occupations eligible for immigration are related to healthcare or STEM workers. Several categories are extensively influenced by the candidate’s professional background, work experience, and whether their occupation is in demand in Canada.
More healthcare and STEM worker will receive invitations in the upcoming months as Canada desperately needs workers from these domains. In addition, the IRCC plans to conduct its first batch of category-based lotteries for STEM professionals in the following week.

IRCC had selected new categories based on labor market assessment, including projections and feedback from stakeholders nationwide.
The immigration department used this information to develop six new categories for Express Entry in the upcoming draws in the coming months. These classifications intended to boost Canada’s position as an immigration destination and encourage more French-speaking nationals to settle in Canada (Outside of Quebec).
