Worried over growing cases of dishonest practices indulged in by some applicants, to acquire the prized citizenship of Canada, the nation's Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister, Jason Kenney, recently disclosed that Ottawa was undertaking the biggest enforcement action of its kind in the history of the Canadian Citizenship. The government was probing 6,500 people from over 100 nations for their supposedly deceitful efforts to acquire the citizenship of the country, or maintain its permanent resident status.
To become a citizen, one having a permanent residency status has to stay one the soils of the Maple Country, i.e., Canada, for three years, out from a period of four years, even as to keep one's status, as a permanent resident, the person has to be physically present on the soils of the nation for two years, out of a period of five years.
The Canadian minister added that the country was mulling over cancelling citizenship for over 2,100 persons even as the officials from the Canadian Immigration kept a tab and scrutinized 4,400 permanent residents, allegedly involved with the residence fraud.
Kenney further said that, in view of the increased scrutiny, nearly 1,400 of these individuals -- most of who were located outside the borders of the nation -- had since taken back or forsaken their applications for citizenship. From the time when the Citizenship Act came into force, way back in 1947, the nation has cancelled only 67 citizenships.
Assuaging the fears of the migrants, the Canadian minister, however, concluded that Canada was not against the immigrants, and the nation's goal in no way was tailored to make it tough for the law-abiding individuals to become the proud citizens of the Maple Country.
