According to a recent report, Nova Scotia is planning to increase immigrants' number in the province, who are already settled there, by the year of 2020. However, this plan will not be possible till the period the federal government withdraws the restrictions. To do so, the territorial and provincial immigration ministers will have a meeting with the Federal counterpart and will discuss the plan of province and lobby the federal government to let loose the restrictions.
Presently, the Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) place the exclusively nominated skilled immigrants on fast track via the federal process. But, by increasing the allocated certificates by 2015, the province will invite 5000 new skilled workers to its land every year, along with 2,500 from the PNP and another 2,500 via various channels of federal immigration.
The PNP programs have been very beneficial particularly in the areas where there are urgent needs for skilled workers, for instance: Manitoba had a burning need for skilled immigrants in large numbers and it had the capacity to increase the number of candidates in the PNP three times more, from 4000 in 2004 to 12000 in 2010.
However, Nova Scotia introduced its first strategy on immigration in the year of 2005 with the purpose of inviting 3600 overseas personnels a year by 2010. In 2011, this beautiful Canadian county added $750, 00 into the $4 million budget to begin with its next strategy on immigration, which aimed at inviting minimum 7200 workers every year. However, half of them were new immigrants along with the members of their family.
PNP Nova Scotia Immigration Categories
There are six Nova Scotia PNP immigration categories, which include: skilled workers, international graduates, non-dependent children, community identified workers, family businesses, and agriculture. With these categories, the province is wishing to maximize its benefits.
The Nova Scotia PNP has welcomed about 36000 immigrants within a year, on national level. The best thing about this program is that once get approval as a member of this program, migrants are provided with the status of permanent residence.
At present, the Office of Prime-minister has declared certain amendments to the federal migration process, such as:
- Face-tracking for foreign students applying for citizenship,
- Introduction of a new skilled business category
- The process of accepting candidates being projected to move a lot smoother.
The said report has also revealed that according to the federal immigration officers, though there is an urgent requirement for skilled business people in the province, but PNPs don't give attention to these matters as these programs are mainly focused at welcoming the professionals.
