What if your parents could stay for a whole decade instead of just a few months?
New Zealand’s recent announcement of the New Zealand Parent Visa 2025 has opened the door to something many skilled migrants have long dreamed of: keeping their parents close for longer. This fresh visa option aims to strengthen family ties, and we’re unpacking exactly what it means—and how to make the most of it.
What’s on Offer?
Beginning 29th September 2025, the 10-year parent visa in New Zealand—formally titled “Parent Boost Visa”—will consist of:
- Five years of multiple-entry visitor visa
- The ability to apply for a second five-year term, making a total of 10 years
- No annual cap — anticipated to be 2,000–10,000 applications a year
This is not about a quick holiday getaway; this is about family on your front porch for the long haul.
Why It Matters: More Than a Visa
- Family reunited: Parents can enjoy grandchild time, celebrations, late-night chai sessions—without the headache of constant visa runs.
- Emotional comfort: Adult kids working overseas gain invaluable support and less loneliness—because who doesn’t need mum’s cooking?
- Strategic appeal: This visa helps bring in more skilled migrants who care as much about their family as their career. As PM Christopher Luxon said, “Ensuring we continue to attract the right people with the skills this country needs…”
Who’s Eligible?
Sponsorship
Your sponsoring child must be either a New Zealand citizen or resident and agree to take care of basic needs – food, accommodation and health support.
Health & Insurance
The parents need to:
- Pass a health check at application and again at year 3
- Have insurance with a minimum coverage of NZD 250,000 for emergency care, NZD 100,000 for cancer treatment, repatriation, etc.
Financial Threshold
Have at least one of these:
- Sponsor earns at least NZ median wage (1.5x for two sponsors)
- The parents’ income is equal to NZ Superannuation rates
- The parents have personal savings: NZD 160,000 (single) or NZD 250,000 (couple)
The Lighter Side of Long-Term Visits
- Think of it as “bring-your-parents-for-a-decade,” a tranquil weekend turned into a family staycation.
- Granting senior citizens the opportunity to grace each grandchild’s milestones without filing a fresh visa every winter.
In summary, New Zealand’s Parent Boost Visa offers a warm and comforting solution to visits, tranquility, and family reconnection.
