Starting September 2, 2025, the visa game is changing for the vast majority of travelers heading to the U.S. – skipping interviews will be eliminated completely. If you have sailed through the visa process before, be prepared for a new experience. This time, you may be meeting face-to-face with a consular officer. That’s right! U.S. Nonimmigrant Visa Interviews are finally becoming the norm again– and this shift affects nearly every visa applicant worldwide.

So, What Exactly Is Changing?

Here is a brief summary from the new rule book:

In-person interviews are starting back for the majority of visa categories
Applies globally—no matter your country
Categories impacted by the return of interviews: E-1, E-2, F-1, H-1B, J-1, L1, O-1, etc.
Applicants renewing their visa will be required to go for an in-person interview

No more “been there, done that” skipping lines—even if you’ve visited the U.S. ten times before.

Who Still Gets a Pass?

Not everyone is back in the interview chair. The U.S. Visa Interview Waiver Policy still applies—but only in limited cases.

You might skip the interview if you’re renewing a B1/B2 visa or Border Crossing Card, and all of the following are true:

You apply within 12 months of your previous visa’s expiration
Your prior visa was full validity, issued when you were 18+
You apply from your home country
You’ve had no visa refusals or potential red flags

Still sounds easy? There’s a catch. These waivers don’t apply to most first-time applicants, kids under 14, or those over 79 anymore—unlike in past years.

Diplomatic & Official Visas: A Different Ball Game

Certain visa classes still enjoy waivers, including:

A-1, A-2, C-3
G-1 through G-4
NATO-1 through NATO-6
TECRO E-1
