India Leads Migration to OECD Nations as China Surges Ahead in Student Visas

The global migration patterns are changing very fast, and the most recent statistics reveal two opposite yet parallel narratives for India and China. India is still by far the biggest country of origin for migrants to the OECD, while now China has become the leading source for students going to the main educational spots.

India Leads Migration to OECD Nations as China Surges Ahead in Student Visas

India Displaces Migration Towards OECD Countries

In the year 2023, the number of Indian citizens migrating to OECD countries exceeded 600,000, which is a significant increase compared to the previous year. India is now definitely the largest source of new migrants to the developed nations, including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.

One of the main contributor sectors to this migration is healthcare and caregiving professions. Last year, almost 17% of the Indian migrants who went abroad did so with health or care-related visas, which indicates the increasing global demand for Indian professionals.

Migration Patterns Bulk up India’s Share

In a significant milestone, approximately 225,000 Indians were granted citizenship in OECD countries last year, which was the highest number for any nationality. Canada, Australia, the UK, and the US are the most sought-after naturalisation places, together accounting for over 80% of this new citizenry.

China Dethrones India in International Student Migration.

Although India stays at the top of the total migration list, it has lost its position in the international student migration. The country of China has become a major source of international students for the leading education markets like the USA and the UK.

The traditional education markets like the USA, the UK, Canada, and Australia have reported a decrease in the number of international students, while the rates for alternative OECD countries—such as Hungary, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea—are growing as students are on the lookout for more affordable and friendly study places.

Increase in Asylum Applications from India

One more trend that is quite noticeable is the increase in the number of asylum applications coming from Indian citizens. Over the period 2019 to 2023, the number of asylum applications from Indians to OECD countries increased almost three times, which is usually associated with economic hardship and lack of job opportunities in their home country.

What These Trends Indicate

The migration pattern mainly at the global level is an indication of the demand for skilled workers, a change in international education preference, plus broader economic factors as the major ones driving migration. For Indian professionals and students, being aware of these trends is crucial to making wise and future-proof decisions.
