Canada to Invite 17,860 Sponsors for Parent, Grandparent PR from July 28
Good news for Canadian families! Canada is once again opening its doors to reuniting more families. From July 28, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will begin sending invitations to 17,860 potential sponsors for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP).
The invitations will be sent to just those who filled out an interest-to-sponsor form in 2020, so if you are one of them and have not heard anything, be sure to check your inbox (junk or spam folders too). IRCC clearly indicated that no new sponsor forms will be accepted this year.
What is the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)?
The Parents and Grandparents Program allows Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and registered Indians to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residency status in Canada.
Here is how it works:
- The invitations will be sent only to those drawn from the 2020 pool.
- Invited sponsors will have to submit their application online using one of the two portals:
- The Permanent Residence Portal or
- The Representative Permanent Residence Portal
- IRCC will accept up to 10,000 complete applications for the 2025 intake.
- This is a lottery-based system due to significant demand.
Not Selected? Super Visa is an Excellent Option
If you are not selected under the PGP, you can still reunite with family through the Super Visa – a flexible, long-term visitor visa for parents and grandparents.
Super Visa Takeaways:
- Validity for 10 years
- Each visit can be up to 5 years
- It may be extended for 2 more years as long as you are in Canada
- Requires private health insurance
- Host is required to meet minimum income requirements
