A lot of Indian students view the
H-1B visa as a stepping stone in creating a long-term career. However, with limited caps, lottery systems, and uncertain policies, the H-1B, however, can no longer be established as a guaranteed road. Fortunately, many alternative routes exist so that international graduates may continue working and living in the U.S.
Alternative Career Paths After U.S. Graduation
- OPT and STEM OPT Extension
After their studies end, they work for 12 months through Optional Practical Training (OPT) on their F1 visa. They get an additional 24 months of work experience if they are in the STEM field.
- Cap-Exempted H-1B Employers
Colleges, nonprofit research organizations, and state research agencies do not fall under the H-1B quota, making them a fitting and secure way for the qualified graduate.
- Higher Education and Specialized Degrees
Pursuing a master’s or PhD degree enhances your employability and resets the time frame for another OPT eligibility.
- Intra-Company Transfers (i.e., L-1 Visa)
Working for a multinational company out of the country and being transferred to its U.S. branch under the L-1 alternative is also an option to the highly competitive H-1B process.
- O-1 Visa for Extraordinary Ability
Students recognized for extraordinary ability in fields such as academics, research, science, business, and arts qualify for O-1 visas, but with higher eligibility criteria.
