Medical professionals specializing as Dietitians and Nutritionists carry out planning, applying and supervising nutrition and food service schemes. These professionals find employment in various establishments including hospitals, home health-care assistance organizations and extended care agencies, community health institutions, the food and beverage companies, the pharmaceutical sector, educational establishments, and government and sports agencies. They can also practice independently. These professionals may have specific knowhow in various domains like administrative dieticians, clinical dieticians, community dieticians, public health nutrition or research dieticians.
 

Main duties

A typical list of obligations of these professionals involve carrying out listed tasks

  • Preparing, monitoring and overseeing nutrition and food preparation and service schemes in hospitals, nursing homes, schools, company cafeterias or similar establishments
  • Assessing nutritional requirements of individuals and rendering advice on nutrition guidance and to health professionals, individuals, dietetic apprentices, community agencies, government and the media
  • Assisting in preventing and/or treating nutrition intake disorders
  • Planning, assessing and carrying out nutrition education schemes and developing educational aids for various sections
  • Practicing independently or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to establish nutritional requirements of patients and planning, applying and assessing normal and therapeutic menus to sustain and boost general health
  • Evaluating current scientific nutritional analysis, carrying out assessments and evaluating scheme effectiveness for enhancing the nutritional value, taste, appearance and preparation of food
  • Practicing within industry in the preparing, assessing and analyzing, and marketing of food and nutritional supplements or as representing organizations while providing specification connected to preparations to health professionals
  • Communicating with other health professionals, social groups, government and the media to render consultation and advice in areas of nutrition interpretation, dispensing and policy
  • Overseeing and imparting training to dietetic apprentices.

Employment requirements

To qualify for NOC code 3132 Dietitians and Nutritionists, you need to be at least

  • A graduate. In certain cases a post graduation in dietetics is deemed necessary, nutrition or a relevant discipline like food and nutritional science or biochemistry and
  • Attended a practical training  under guidance for a stipulated period

To practice in Canada, you need to obtain an approval from a designated authority
