UK's Post-study Work Visa category for graduate students is included under the Tier 1 Visa that enables non-European Union students to stay in the United Kingdom for 2 years after completion of their courses in the country. In other words, it is a transitional route for talented foreign pupils who have graduated from UK universities to transfer their student visas to work/business visas. The UK immigration minister, Damian Green, however, is proposing to scrap the visa category, thanks to the abuse of the system practiced by many international students.
The Tier 1- Post-study Work Visa category is designed to facilitate the most talented students to take up skilled employment in the UK. But, it is often found that many aspirants are not always the genuine ones- they take up bogus courses in the country only to pave the way to obtain post-study work visa or to stay in the country to find some employment engagements. This could be apparent from 2009's statistics. In the said year, a total number of 380,000 foreign students obtained the visa, out of which only half secured skilled occupations, while rest secured engagements in less skilled occupations, such as in customer services, secretarial, catering or sales roles.
Unauthentic international students taking up less skilled jobs in the UK at lower salary packages also diminishes the opportunities for local graduates to find employment. According to recent stats, UK's graduate unemployment reached 17-year high. Besides this, there are many other problems that bounce from the fact the country being too generous and welcoming to international students applying for all levels of courses or bogus courses. Mostly, many enter the UK to pursue below degree level courses only to stay and work in the country.
Abandonment of the Tier 1- Post-study Work Visa is possibly the right measure for the UK government to prevent unscrupulous students from entering the UK and grab the opportunities which otherwise could be availed by eligible local graduates.
