Reports suggest that Christchurch (Canterbury, New Zealand) is facing a high level of scarcity of chefs, inspiring the Hospitality New Zealand - the organization which stands for more than 2,400 hospitality ventures across the Kiwi Land -- to put pressure on Wellington to include chefs in the Skills Shortage list of Canterbury.
Even though restaurants -- back in the business, post the earthquakes -- are eager to have high category employees on their pay rolls, several chefs had no option except to exit the city, for jobs abroad, or in some other cities of the country following the earthquakes, which jolted the nation during February last year.
Thanks to the quakes, several restaurants and other enterprises had to suffer extensive damage even as it took several months for many enterprises located in the region to pull through. To help with the rebuild effort initiatives, the Immigration New Zealand (INZ) came up with a Skills Shortage List (Canterbury) which makes it less complex for the trained workers, mainly from the industry involved with construction, to make a move to the region.
Meanwhile, a spokeswoman from the INZ was quoted as saying that the list of skills shortage of the area was confined to roles straightaway related to the reconstruction efforts. Although the profession of chefs finds mention on the long-term shortage list of the country, they were not covered exclusively for the Canterbury region.
At the present, Canterbury has 70 hospitality businesses -- thanks to re-opening, in the wake of the earthquake repairs. Visitors from abroad keen to migrate to the country would do well to apply as soon as possible.
