In a key development--and according to the Australian Minister for Immigration & Citizenship-from the time the first citizenship service of the country was held way back during 1949, Canberra has eventually rolled-out red-carpet welcome to over 4.5 million people from across the globe and embraced them as Australian citizens.
Chris Bowen, the minister, added that touching the milestone of 4.5 million people is really very inspiring and something to go to town with, from Australian perspectives. The minister further observed that these people--who have pocketed the citizenship of the country--have turned-up on the nation's soils from more than 200 nations of the world.
He continued that the first batch of 7 individuals who pocketed citizenship during 1949 had arrived from these nations--Greece, Norway, Spain, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Denmark, and France. During the 1970s, Canberra witnessed a remarkable increase in the overall figures of the citizenship applicants from these nations--Greece, Italy, Lebanon, the UK, etc. Lately, New Zealand, India, China, Vietnam and South Africa have heavily been sending migrants to Down Under, and many of them have eventually pocketed the much sought after citizenship status.
Before the landmark year of 1949, when law was introduced officially classifying the individuals as Australians, a sizeable section of the population in the country was regarded as British subjects. During the period of 2010-11, nearly 100,000 persons eventually received the prized citizenship of the country.
He added that citizenship is the powerful glue that strongly holds the culturally diverse populace of the nation close and together. This high point reveals the true and real value of citizenship to all Australians. They may have acquired the privilege by birth, or by choice-but it hardly matters.
Bowen further said that the citizenship of the nation is only-one-of-its-kind. The same carries certain duties even as it gives many privileges also. Besides, citizenship stands for unmatched loyalty and unflinching commitment to the cause of the nation, to its populace, and to the common values all the citizens of Down Under share with others, with much pride.
