Pursuant to the latest census report of Canada, all the four Atlantic Provinces of the country, namely: Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and, Newfoundland and Labrador have seen an incredible population growth in the recent period of time.
Immigration is considered to be the main cause, which is contributing to this growth in these provinces. According to the latest Census report, the population increase rates in these regions of Canada for the period of 2006-2011 were:
- Prince Edward Island: 3.2 %
- New Brunswick: 2.9 %
- Newfoundland and Labrador: 1.8 %
- Nova Scotia: 0.9 %
The population increase rates in all these four Canadian Atlantic Provinces were comparatively higher than the 5 years period mentioned by the previous census.
A recent report from a reliable source has revealed that all these provinces of Atlantic Canada aim to attract more overseas immigrants to their land and to retain these immigrants for longer settlement. These Canadian provinces have requested the federal government for caps' increase on their particular Provincial Nominee Programs, which are the main drivers for new immigrants to these provinces.
Bigger commercial projects are introduced as a new source of employment contributing to immigration. It includes building of Nova Scotia, the next fleet of warships of Canada, the natural gas industry of New Brunswick, and other different types of projects in Newfoundland and Labrador.
While the latest census has revealed that the population of Canada is much larger in the West Ontario than the East Ontario, the Atlantic Provinces of Canada are also seeing this growth, with decreasing outflow of population from this county to other provinces due to the growth in their native economies.
